First off all, as a new member let me say Hi to all of you out there.
Especially my fellow electricians on both sides of the world.

Now this question has probably been done to death, but here goes anyway!

I am seriously thinking about migrating over to Australia (aren't we
all!),  as an electrician. But before I do so, I plan to visit next year
on a 'fact finding mission'. Haven't quite decided if it will be on a
working holiday visa or a tourist visa, but that's another story.

My main question is, what can I do now in respects to gathering paper
work, information, etc, that will aid me when I do finally decide to
fill out a TRA in a few years time (need more time to gain my four years
experience!).

Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated. My boss is also
interested in following the same route, so you can guess what the common
topic at work usually is!

Many thank.

Hi

I'm a Spark's wife and was responsible for the completion and the
eventual approval of my OH's TRA.  You will need all your certificates,
fully filled in and signed apprenticeship completion papers, documents
showing the nature and content of the course (I used a copy of the JIB
training schedule), a written reference from each employer you have
worked for as an apprentice and as a qualified electrician (they don't
have to sing your praises, just state in great detail the work you
do/did on a day-to-day basis and a full list of all the tools you
use/used.  This has to be on the company letter-headed paper stating
dates you were employed, your name and your job whilst employed by them.
You also need your birth certificate, passport and photos (i think).
But you do not send any original documents, you must get them all copied
and certified by a solicitor or judge.  Can't think of anything else at
the moment except TRA application form and some cash to pay for
application, oh yes, and lots of patience.

Good Luck

Thanks for the great input Rachel, I appreciate it.

I never did an apprenticeship, only 'on-site' training. Will this have a
bearing on the final result?  To show my skills gained, I am currently
writing all manner of works done on to paper, with the aim of my
previous employer (and current) signing the work sheets. Am I going
about this the right way? Would this be sufficient? I based the sheets
on a JIB work assessment form that I had given to me a while back. Im
sorry to ask so many questions, but I need to get this right otherwise
it will be a lot of work wasted!

When they ask for work references, is that from every employer that you
have worked for, even if some have nothing to do with the electrical
trade? I have a feeling that one or two of my past employers ( non
electrical) are no longer in business.

Again, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Simon.
