I think this should be a simple one to answer but has recently given me
some concern.
I have completed my police checks (without request) by applying
through my local police station using the release of data protection
act form, costing about £10, as suggested by the Police when I
explained what I needed.
I have received the certs back (clear!!), but I have also noticed that
the DIMIA website also has the form 1101, 'Police Records Check -
Consent to obtain personal information' which I have not completed. Can
anyone confirm if I have gone down the right route, or will I need to
resubmit the form 1101 and wait another 4 weeks???

Assuming you are referring to a UK police check, then yes, you have done
the correct thing. The Data Protection £10 check is the one you need.

You have nothing to worry about so far. That form is only needed if
you've spent roughly 12 months in another country. I have had to send
for my 1101 as I was in Oz on a WHM for nearly a year. You are lucky
that you dont have to send for 1101 as it is a right pain!!! Need a Oz
bankers draft made out to the AFP, International Reply Coupon,
photocopies, more forms to fill in yadda yadda yadda!!! And it takes up
to 30days to return.
