Just had my HNC in Mechanical and Production Engineering knocked back
for Sydney Accord by the Engineering Council UK.
That stuffs things right up.
I have appealed it as their accreditation criteria is very misleading.
This is what they say for assessing my qualification:-
• The academic requirement for BTEC/TEC/EdExcel HNC courses started
1987 onwards is a minimum of 8.0 H units (or level IV and V), including
1.0 H units project, 1.0 N/H or H units computing, and 1.0 Units N/H
level (level III) mathematics. Where the candidate completed an ONC
prior to the HNC, the mathematics requirement may have been satisfied in
an ONC. The same applies to the computing requirement, and may be
comprised of different units, e.g. computing for engineering,
introduction to robotics, CAD, etc. #
I have the level H computing, level H project and level NH maths along
with 5 level H other subjects.
Technically I only have 7 level H units plus the maths at N/H.....so,
I don't comply with the very first line needing 8 level H units, but
then it says including N/H maths - so surely thats seven H units and
N/H maths????
It is not a well written paragraph at all.
Has anyone applied under Sydney Accord without first having the
assessment by a UK body?
Do the IEAUST apply their own criteria for assessment, or would their
first port of call be ENGC, then turn down my application if ENGC wont
accredit my HNC?
Cheers all.....

Hi there
Dont know if this helps you much but i was in a similar position
i have a Bsc in Mechancal engineering gained at demonfort university...
i submitted that under the washington accord however it wasnt
recognised so they looked at putting me through on the sydney Accord,
that was worse as if i had an HND (which i had gained in my second
year) and not a Bsc things would apparently of been a bit easier. The
engineering council were of no use what so ever.. i even went to the
design engineering council and they, although they tried, couldnt
really help at all.
I think the way you have to go is to Create a CDR (competency
demonstration report) and submit that for the category that you are
aiming at. There are 3 levels Proffesional engineer Technologist
engineer and associate engineer. Strangely enough although they were
looking at trying to get me through the sydney accord level (which i
think is the equivalent of the Sydney accord level) i went full on for
the proffesional level... and with abit of hard graft (about 3 months) a
lot of panic that i was doing things right, everything went through and
i was assesed succesfully! much to my surprise! :D
i guess this may be your only route if the Eng Council UK are unwilling
to help (which i guess they will be)
if you need any more info guidance reassurance anything... just ask on
here or PM me

Thanks Steve,
The Engineering Council will definitely not accredit my HNC.
They have conceded that the wording of there assessment criteria is
incorrect and will refund my assessment fee as I would not have bothered
applying if I had known the correct criteria.
Looks like I will have to go CDR which I really don't fancy.
I am off to trawl the forum, see if someone has a CDR at Associate level
I can borrow.
Cheers....
Tony.

Tony
dont worry too much about the CDR if you have good work experience then
it will be a doddle. i considered going for technologist which i thought
would be the level you were going for??? is that what level you meant? i
was very surprised that i got the higher one.
one thing i will say is the anticipation of doing the CDR is far far
worse than actually doing it. The guidlines dont help much for the fear
either as they are full of competencies that they want you to
demonstrate, however you dont have to hit all of them... just the main
headings... not each example. i worried about that for a while.
if you want to see mine feel free to ask.... its really not that clever,
so you may be surprised and may want to try for the high level... all
depends on what you want :)
Thanks
Steve

Hi Steve,
A look at yours would be great. ( The CDR that is......)
I have printed off the overseas assessment kit from IEAUST, is there
another 'pack' to download that has the CDR application - or is it more
like an essay that you need to write based on whats in the overseas kit?
Thanks.

Hi Tony
the overseas assesment pack is the one you need... that gives you all
the competencies you need to acheive... for a given standard that your
trying to reach. to be honest witha HNC i'd be going for at least the
technologist level not associate.
in the Assement pack the list of competencies you have to demonstrate is
the ET2.1 ET2.2 etc... BUT, AND THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT.... (i missed it
nearly!) THE SUB COMPETENCIES ARE EXAMPLES in the way you may hit that
specific competency, they are not exhaustive either.. you may think that
something else you did may hit the competency and as long as you
reference it at the back of the report then its no problem (as long as
it does demonstrate it :) )
tha application for the cdr assesment is found at the below link
http://www.ieaust.org.au/find/osqa/res/downloads/CompetencyDemonstratio-
nReportApplicationForm.pdf
just out of interest are you using an agent? he should be supplying
these forms and everything for you... i havent had to find a thing... my
agent has emailed everything to me. The only thing he was useless at is
helping with the competency demonstration report.... to quote... 'im not
an engineer... thats your job!'
it sounds a big task... it looks a big task but in reality its really
not that bad.. just a little long winded.
PM me your email and i will shoot a copy of the CDR off to you.
if you need a chat... just to go over things... well i dont mind
that either...

TF,
Could you not got yo the UNI you took your HNC at and speak to the head
of department? They might be able to offer advice?

Hi Chappers - The EngUK council would not allow any extra units
to be added.
You can only count the units that were done within the wrapper of the
HNC at the time, and in some circumstanes, a computer or maths unit
from an ONC.
I think the only way to do it via an Accord is to study to upgrade my
HNC to an accredied HND or degree. The problem with that is that I am 30
in February so I would not have time to get the qualifications before I
loose points for age.

Hi Steve,
Possible to send me a copy of the CDR? Busy doing mine as well for
Technologist.
Would be appreciated
