As I've been invited on Thursday and still deciding whether to go, I
thought I would start a thread where those attending can make comments.

How was it for you?

Useful or a waste of time, job interviews/offers etc????

Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I've just got back from the expo. Without trying to sound daft, it is
geared up for the people who are expecting to emmigrate in the next year
or so(rather than longer term). I personally cannot move until two years
time, but still found that it was worth going if only for the literature
they are giving out.
W.A have their own stall, and give out a handy info pack with relevant
info for the regions of W.A. Any technical tradesmen who are planning on
migrating as soon as possible- get yourself there and register with the
employment agents. I asked the Nayler rep. about job opportunities and
he told me that because i am not going out to oz for another couple of
years, to get in touch with them nearer the time, as i will be sick of
the sight of potential job offers coming through in the meantime.
Incidentally, Tasmania are gagging for tradesmen due to (from the reps
mouth) a lack of foresight on their part with respect to regional
growth, and this is likely to last for at least the length  of an
apprenticeship (3-5 years) due to the fact the TAFE's are now really
trying to attract new fledgeling tradesmen (if that makes sense-
hopefully you get what i mean)
Anybody migrating shortly-make sure you take CV's and references etc.-
the reps will take them back with them.
Also, talking to the W.A. skilled migration dept. rep - there is an
awareness of the potentially long wait for an electrical licence once
you get there, and an initiative to align the TRA assessments more
closely to the licencing bodies is in the offing- how long that takes is
anybody's guess.
That's all i can think of at the minute, apart from the fact that the
Wellington pub just along the road from Australia House serves Carling
at £2.45 per pint- and it's not a bad pint either.
Anybody wanting any more info, pm me and i'll get beck to you.

Ooh, sounds like it's definately worth going to then. Was it very busy
or did you get time to see everyone you wanted?

i managed to squeeze in 6 or 7 people, it's a matter of looking closely
at the booths so that you get the right person.
For example at booth 2 there are two people-a skill matching biassed rep
and a TRA rep- look at the board behind the people, they indicate which
person does what.
Make sure you know who you want to see before you go in- the floorplan
on the final info e-mail and the list of exhibitors will be a big help
so take it with you. There was quite a big queue for the W.A. booth and
the DIMIA/TRA booth, so get in the right queue  or you might end up
wasting a bit of your time. Bear in mind that a lot of the booths are
targetting a selected "target" but can generally point you in the right
direction of who to see if they can't help you.
Oh, hairdressers seemed to be the profession to be in if only due to the
fact that the desk is the first one you come tooo and there wasn't a
queue for the rep while i was there. Don't forget to pick up your free
swag bag - you'll know what i mean if you go.

Floorplan, Final Info Email?!? We didn't get one -  just had an email
telling us where to go and what time to be there! Oh no! Did you notice
if there was much for carpenters?

Never noticed to be honest-too busy flitting about, if you send me your
e-mail address i'll send you the final info attachments,i.e. the
floorplan and exhibitors etc. Unless there is a way of attaching files
to the pm/email link from your profile?Never mind-just sussed it out-
hopefully i'm not infringing any rules-i know for a fact that one person
there today never received the attachments on an e-mail, and he had an
invite. The files should be attached to this post.
All the best and good hunting

I don't know hat to do!
I tried to get an invitation for weeks (I am a Marketing Specialist, 50
points occupation on SOL), newsletter, e-mails etc. Called the
australian embassy 'cause I didn't recieve an invitation, first they
told me that I will definetly be invited and not to worry. A week before
the expo (in Amsterdam) they told me I should register again and
everything will be alright.
And tody I recieved a denial! Bugger!!!
My occupation is on the SOL (50 points)
I am under 35
I have a Masters degree
My english is excellent
I have recent workexperience...
What did I do wrong? Or what's wrong in general? Do they really want to
attract highly skilled and well educated migrants?
Does anyone know here the expo will be held in Amsterdam?
Or is really more nursing, tradies orientated? But anyway I would have
really wanted to talk to someone of DIMIA about SIR, processing times,
chances, for Marketing Managers etc...
Ggggmmmmffff

I went along today to do a bit of networking really as I am still
getting my TRA together as a fitter. My appointment was at 2pm but there
was a que when I got there but it moved along fairly quickly so wasn't
too bad( i hate queing).

I went along to the queensland stand and had a chat about the area and
job prospects, they seemed very positive. I then had a chat to the TRA
chap which was helpfull as he gave me a couple of pointers for my form.
The engineering side seemed to be mainly heavy industry based which was
not what I was looking for but they gave me the impression that all
industry was suffering from a lack of trained staff so any skilled
trades seem to be sought after. I was only looking in the Queensland
area so can't comment on the other areas.

Overall I would say it was worth it, although I am not far outside
London so it's not too bad for me to get to, although sitting on a train
in and out of London makes me thankfull I don't have to commute.

You also get a free travellers guide to oz any a few leaflets on
areas etc.

Thanks for the info. Still don't know whether to go.
Sounds like it's geared towards tradesmen and not much on offer for me
(accountant). Thinking I may give it a miss on Thursday.

mmmm - I'm an accountant as well - meant to be going tomorrow.  We have
our visa looking to move in about 6 months. Should go as there are
others that wanted the invite and didn't get it.

I'm only an hour from London, so it should be ok.  Trouble is, really
manic at work this week, shouldn't really take time.

I'll let you know what I think about it tomorrow night.

It looks like only PWCoopers are going to be there. I have my skills
assessment already, and when I got the invite and saw the detail I
thought it was geared towards those wanting to be sponsored rather than
those on a 136. It's a pity that we didn't get the option to accept or
decline the invitation then at least those spaces could have been
filled. My appointment isn't until 4pm thursday which means me not
getting the train back to Yorkshire umtil 7.30 and back home near
midnight. Would still like to hear what you thought though tomorrow
night - thanks. Any other accountants been or going??

I folks, thought Id just give you a quick overview of the expo if your
planning to go during the rest of the week...

There wasn't a huge amount there, most of the regional governments have
stands offering details on locations, sponsorship etc. If you after
details on how to get sponsorship it may well be worth paying a visit.
In terms of information about the migration process, you'd probably be
pushed to get all the information you'd want - it was pretty busy.

I got some good responses from some engineering recruitment agents,
almost to the point of their eyes lighting up when I told them my
experience and that were planning to hit Perth in November/December. If
your looking for engineering work, GO.

Also lots of medical representatives there, As with engineering, if your
looking for work in medicals field, definitely worth a visit.

Not many migration agents there, I would have thought the MARA would
have been a good exhibitor, but wasn't represented.

In all, yep worth the visit. Plus I got to go out on with a mate for
beers afterwards.

Hi

My husband went on Tuesday (he is an accountant), he found very few
people that were interested in accountants, it seemed to be mainly
tradespeople that they were looking for. PWC were there, they took
his CV, a few recruitment agencies said that they had clients that
might be interested in accountants.  The government reps just said
that they didn't know if they were looking for accountants and to
look on their websites.

Overall he felt that it was a bit of a waste of time for him....
although he did bring back lots of info etc and the free OzGuide!  There
may be a chance that someone will contact him, but they probably tell
everyone that.....  there is 160 new people entering every hour!

He also said that it was very busy and very cramped.  Make sure if
you go you have already decided who you want to go and see before
you get in.

Did you go?  Who did you see and what was your impression?  I am going
tomorrow (Thursday).  Did you have to queue for PWC...we are looking for
sponsorship.  Who else would you suggest we see?

Hope its worth it as we are coming from Plymouth and as you say it is a
manic  time of year at work...

Sorry for delay in posting...just finished work!!!! Don't you just love
Qtr close!!!

Anyway, to cut a long story short, all hell broke loose at work in the
morning and it was just not going to happen, so I didn't get there,
which I am annoyed about as I would have like to go to just to see what
the thought of my CV and experience. Anyway, it seems like it wasn't too
geared up for us guys, so I'm not as worried.

Anyway, I think I may just e-mail a few agencies in Jan as we are hoping
to go out in March next year.

You're quite right. It is definitely for the trades/mining/health care.

PriceHouseWaterman were there though, so that may be of interest to you
being an accountant, but probably nothing you couldn't get through an
email to them.

I was there for the opening at 0930 on Tuesday. I'm a computer
programmer and found it of no use. The WA stand took my details as they
seem to have set themselves up almost as an agency (had a list of
current jobs on offer) but once again, nothing I couldn't have got from
the internet. A little disappointed myself, but as I say, if you are
particularly into mining or healthcare then it would be very useful.

Hi all

I went to the expo yesterday at 2.30. It was very informal and was more
like an exhibition than any kind of job interview.
I would be very surprised if anybody got a job offer there and then but
a lot of the exhibitors where very positive. I am a Mechanical
maintenance Fitter and there was quite a few people there who were
positive but to be honest I think the best bet is with the employment
agents there.

If you are anyway skilled in either the medical industry or are a heavy
duty diesel fitter you will walk into a barrage of job offers when your
cv's are processed.

I wouldn't bother with the full suited and booted look though as it is
very informal and a lot more rushed than you may imagine.

On the whole it is probably worth going as you never know and it is
situated in a nice part of London.

Hope this helps Sean

I will be unable to attend this exhibition, due to the fact that I live
in Glasgow and the only UK expo is in London, but I was curious as to
whether anyone got any web addresses for the recruitment companies. I am
a maintenance electrician and hoping to move over in June/July next
year, (Away getting our medicals yesterday). Any information would be
greatly appreciated.

If you let us know where you are planning to move to, either myself or
one of the other visitors will probably be able to help- the reps i
spoke to were primarily aiming for people moving to the east side,
although they were nationwide.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that I am moving to Melbourne, so hopefully
someone out there can help
