Hi everybody.
I have a few questions which I hope somebody might be able to give m
some answers.
We are just about to take the first step of applying for a busines
owner visa, and the follwing things are a little unclear before I tak
the step and spend lots of money.
1. Will I be able to work in Australia before I have set up my ne
business ?
2. If my business fails, do I lose my visa rights and have to leav
Australia, or can I stay and find work ?
3. What is the required investment for a business owner vis
application ?
4. I had heard that you cannot buy property in the first 6 months i
Australia as a new migrant, is this correct ?
Aslo, if anybody has any suggestions I would be grateful for any help
We are planning to set up a wholesale business in Melbourne

If you qualify for a Business Visa see
http://www.dimia.gov.au/allforms/books7.ht
then you will be granted a 4 year provisional (temporary) busines
visa
I dont know the answer to all your questions but with question 2
believe you have to turn over a certain amount per year and also adher
to other criteria such as employing Australian workers etc otherwis
your visa can be cancelled. With question 4, you can buy property on
temporary visa but it must be new (new house or land) and you must ge
approval from the FIRB (Foreign Investment Review Board). Once yo
obtain Permanent Residency which would be granted to you after 4 year
of proving your business and following the criteria then you ca
purchase property without going through the FIRB
Website for FIRB and their FAQs
http://www.firb.gov.au/content/faq.as
Im sure someone who knows more about your visa can give you bette
advice on the forums
Good Luck

Thanks mrmigration for the answers,
My situation is that I have filled in the provisional forms, and th
migration bureau that I am using has said that I am applicable to appl
for a business visa.
I know the general ins and outs of setting up a business regardin
turnover and emplloying Australian citizens, but as most of you know
it's a bit of a maze with all the rules and regulations.
If anybody knows wether I can work before the business is set up woul
be most appreciated, because if I spend 6-8 months organizing things
it would be handy to have some sort of income at the same time. :

G'day Gringo. Welcome aboard.. :)
As far as I am aware, there are no work restrictions for you or your
dependents during the four-year temporary visa.
If, after the 4 years, your business was not sufficient to qualify you
to apply for PR, then you could only stay by applying for another visa
category (ie Skilled etc)
In the 12 months immediately prior to your application for PR, your net
assets in business in Australia must be at least A$100,000.
For the sponsored business owner visa (163) there is no specific minimum
investment required (if you satisfy other criteria). As the previous
poster suggested, you would be well-advised to download and study
booklet 7.
No. See the FIRB link above.
I do hope the above helps.
If you have any further questions, you will be made very welcome in the
163 business visa thread:
http://britishexpats.com/forum/showthread.php?t=293591
please don't feel that you need to read the whole thing before asking a
question - 2500 posts will take some getting through..!! ;)
But they're a very friendly and helpful bunch in there - I could not
have got my visa so quickly (41 days...!!!) without all their help,
advice and encouragement.
All the best,
Rogue.

Thanks Rogue, that really does shed some more light onto the situation.

Ok. I now have an appointment with my migration officer on Thursday i
Amsterdam to start the ball rolling.
Has anybody got any idea the normal time period for acceptance of
business visa ? (if we get accepted of course !!!!)
b.t.w. I have looked at many forums over the last few months, and
have to admit this one seems to be the best for sound advice I hav
come across.
Keep up the good work.
