We are off to Adelaide, all my family live there, also the weather i better for me, dont like humidity, its more of a dry heat.
Although I have visited most of Aus already and all parts of th country are beautiful in their own way, I suppose it depends on eac individuals preference, I grew up in Adelaide back in the Seventies s it will always be " home " to me. ( when we eventually get our vis !!!!

We're hoping to go to Brisbane, there seems so much to do around th area and he combination of that and the weather (here and there) i irresistable!
Plus I had a reasonable amount of interest from a prospective employe - so fingers crossed.

I said Queensland (Brisbane) because that's the intention, family ther and weather appealing and property prices still reasonable.
Having said that we now have prospective employment in Melbourne s very possible we'll be switching. Been reading up on Melbourne all da and have to say its starting to appeal quite a lot, it was voted 'bes city to live in' with Geneva and Vancouver

Lodged the visa on March 30, with state police clearance, via our agen in New York. Sent the federal FBI clearance around April 15, and go medicals done May 2. The doctor told me the meds would be posted of around May 10. Also, am sending another state police clearance thi week, as immigration lost my first one. Was told my our agent that th visa may possibly be granted by the end of May - as the CO processin it has been fast with processing in the past. Will update post wit timeline if anything new occurs

daniel - 08 May 2007 21:58 GMT No idea how fast houses are selling here at the moment, I guess we wil have to wait and see. That's what worries me more than anything, w have to sell before we can go.
Sent off for police checks today and meds are booked for 21st and 22n May. Only two weeks to work ourselves up, OH has tendencies toward high BP but have managed to get it down alot so fingers crosse although it's bound to play up on the day. I don't know a thing about medicine but I got the impression that they have to culture the blood sample or something. It isn't the lab being slow that causes this delay but something to do with how to test blood for HIV.
The Panel Doctor told us (my mother was the visa applicant) that he would send the application off once he had the HIV results back. I think most of them are pretty good about sending the meds off promptly. Make sure the doctor uses a courier for the meds, not the post.
Good luck with your meds.

I came straight to Sydney, I'm sad to say, just because of its size. I' a Big City kind of girl, and Sydney has a great mixture of bus metropolitan lifestyle in the center tempered with village atmospher in some of the outlying suburbs. I've found New South Wales to be nic and varied, though Victoria (the only other state I've visited so far does have a special appeal of its own. I'm looking forward to visitin Adelaide and Perth, seeing how highly they rate here

NSW Central Coast seems good, although we haven't lived there. Have passed through the area.
>we have not visited anywhere else. tracey has a friend who recently >migrated to adelaid and is loving it. As a minor point, do you have anything against capital letters or spelling? The name of the city is "Adelaide". :-)
I spent a few days there many years ago. In Australia, used to be known as the "City of Churches".
At the time, a very friendly city. Probably still is. Can get a bit cold in winter, though.
>perth sounds very appealing but in a cowardly way we are initially >going to stay close by our friends. I appreciate your honesty over the "cowardly way"! One of the reasons I am posting a reply.
Australia is a very pleasant country for Americans, if you don't mind the low population density.
A bit smaller than the continental US, but not that much. Low population density, especially once get a bit away from the coastal cities.
Depends on what you want, of course. Currently, Australia has a total population of around 21 million, most of which are in the capital cities or within 70 km or roughly 40 miles of the coast.
Un crowded, friendly, and fascinating country. From a "lifestyle" point of view, perhaps something like the US was in 1920 or so, but with current technology.
If you move into a new city or neighborhood, you probably will not get a "welcome wagon" urging you to patronize the donor stores.
On the other hand, it is very easy to make friends wherever you locate.
Although, there is much more "privacy" than in the USA if that is what you want.
The "Central Coast" of NSW seems to be a reasonable starting point.
Put it this way, if my wife and I were going to the US, wouldn't choose a major city such as N.Y. or L.A.
Still, moving to another country can be a major event. Personally, would advise you to spend a bit of time on the central coast, then explore Sydney and Brisbane, for a start.
Australian states and cities are more "different" from one another than is the case is the USA.
I came to Sydney from the USA decades ago. Consigned my "freight" of personal possessions to "American Express, Sydney"
A hugely useful service, incidentally. Would highly recommend it for worldwide travel, for many reasons.
Immigration to another country is always a bit of an "adventure", but IMHO, you could do far worse than the Central Coast of N.S.W. for a start.
A lot of Americans migrate to Australia. Unfortunately, most don't post their initial impressions, let alone how they are getting along, to this group.
I hope that you will be an exception. Suggest that you keep a diary, or record your impressions on tape, and take some photos from the time you leave.
Writing in a diary can be a bit of a chore, so would suggest that you have a pocket recorder, even a tape recorder, so you can easily record each step of your journey and edit it later for publication, even some excerpts on this group.
Should include your first impressions of leaving the US for a new life in a different country. Perhaps what, if any, problems you have encountered. What you are taking with you, or shipping ahead.
Personally, I would be interested in earlier data, such as why you are interested in moving to another country. Any problems encountered, and so on.
IMHO, a great adventure awaits both of you, and I do hope that you will keep the group informed on your progress!
Cheers,

P.S. If some of you can access the New Year fireworks live on some cable or satellite channel, I would suggest you have a look at them Sydney does provide a major display. being one of the first major cities in the world to welcome in the New Year, as the first major city in Australia to welcome in the New Year.
Not that I personally think that 2008 will be any better than 2007, if as good, but then again am a "realist" not an "optimist" :-)
Readers who are curious might want to check the financial market news around January or February 2008'

BM - South Africa - 17 Oct 2007 16:05 GMT Hi there - our application was receipted on 13 March (and the money was taken in May). So far it's all quiet - but we're hoping that we can get our PR by Jan/Feb 2008??? And move in April??? Very nervous as we've already got our house on the market and starting our dogs in quarantine next month (6 months SA/1 month Australia) Bernice

Mark - 17 Oct 2007 16:20 GMT Hi BM - All being well you've done your timing right. Still a big waiting game I'm afraid. Good move on putting the house on the Market now though.
How is the Market in SA? Better than the UK I hope :)

BM - South Africa - 18 Oct 2007 08:11 GMT Hi Mark - thanks, we're unfortunately struggling with the house ... hav had it on the market for 6 months already ... but not sold yet. We'v had 7 interest rate hikes in a row now, and they've just made borrowin harder by changing our Credit Agreement Act - but things will happen i due course (I hope) and at least we then might get to spend our las Christmas in our home.
From what I can see - the websites are saying it takes 6 months to year to get your permanent residency (from submission date) are yo finding this to be accurate?
Our agent still feels we could get a case officer in December/Januar and because our application is complete with medicals and polic clearance, etc it should be approved (hold thumbs) quite quickl thereafter. They feel we should be able to leave in March/April ..

Ouija - 16 Nov 2007 02:21 GMT Hi everyone, just thought id let you all know that I have had a reques for my medicals from my case officer! Im a bit worried about this as the medicals were front loaded in May o this year and when I called the LCU they said that they have no recor of my medicals?? Is it possible these have been sent to the ASP instead? If so is it a problem of do the two companies work i conjunction with each other?
Bit of a panic now to be honest!!
Anyone got any advice?

Depending on your newsreader, you may be able to access them directly by clicking on the Message-ID number given. If not, go to Google, click on "advanced search" then cut and paste the the desired number in the space provided. The top one is the original question, followed by two replies.
I don't know if Google advanced search will accept multiple message number enquires, in one search, as haven't tried it.
Other than this, my usual general advice on submitting anything to any Government department by post.
Postal items can get lost in the mail, documents can get misfiled, and so on.
If submitting any important documents by post, it is worth the peace of mind and the extra cost to send them registered mail with a return receipt requested. At least you will know that they have arrived and have been signed for.

Firstly, congrats; things seem to be progressing well :
I would have thought the ASPC would have forwarded on your Meds to th correct area if they were sent there in error
Hopefully Pete or George may be able to give you some advice on th best approach for dealing with this..
Alternatively you may be able to request for your med results to b resent

SheoWahya - 17 Nov 2007 13:33 GMT Mark & Ouija:
I can confirm that ASPC does in fact forward medicals to LCU when the are received there in error. That is the exact scenario that happene to me. My doctor sent them to ASPC for some reason, but it's all good because they were forwarded to LCU and I have since received my visa.
The last I heard, LCU was running about an 8 week backlog in processin medical reports, so it may just be that you are in the queue.
I would definately let your case officer know that medicals hav already been provided and let him/her know the circumstances unde which they were provided. You can also lodge a PLE with LCU. Unfortunately though, there is no guarantee you will get an answer. sent one back on October 6 and still haven't received a reply. Moo point now that I have that wonderful sticker in my passport :D
Best of luck!! the waiting is the WORST part once you have it, life kicks into ULTRA HIGH gear!!!

BM - South Africa - 07 Dec 2007 12:12 GMT Thanks Girish - we're so thrilled ourselves. Our agents mentioned tha things are pretty messy at the ASPC at the moment, but they seem to b making good progress with clearing that backlog. Even although th automated responses say that they're only looking at Januar applications, they seem to also be assigning case officers for end Jul applicants (this is from 2 separate friends of ours who both applie mid/end July). So hang in there - I'm sure that the time frames wil improve

I'm still undecided that's why I haven't placed my vote yet.
I'd like a more relaxed city just like Perth or Adelaide. However, m wife tends to Sydney because of the family and friends. I'm trying t change her mind but is kinda hard :haha
Being from Venezuela we find that any city we choose in Aus wil triplesize the extension of our current town, so that isn't a majo problem.
We only look forward for a relaxed city when we can raise our kids in quietly way and - just like SplitHorizon said -my IT skills could giv me a job.
:) But now we are fighting the fight my wife Sydney and I fo Perth/Adelaide. When we have finished I place my vote.
Opinions are welcome :)

I have decided to go to Perth as well because of the booming minin sector. But I dont think Im prepared to live full time in the outback so ideally I would be looking for good FIFO deals. But if I get better FIFO deal in other city then i would move there. I have Brisban on my mind.

Were planning to move to Victoria, probably to one of the suburbs in th North East of the Melbourne Metropolitan.
I researched Sydney first thinking in my ignorance that it was the onl place to consider. For us NSW is too expensive and the commute to th city would be too long. Melbourne still offers plenty of jobs in IT bu you can live closer to the city to reduce travel time but still fee that you are living in the countryside. For us this provides the bes of both worlds

We won't be living in the city, but right on the outskirts of th Metropolitan. My husband will be working in the Melbourne CBD and w want to get the work/life balance right by finding a block of land i the countryside that is still within a reasonable commuting time o 1hr. He will drive to the station and take the train to the center. Th area that we have picked has only a few homes and no shops - just how w like it. When we want some excitement we can drive to the city outsid the rush hour in 40mins.
We like the idea of Bendigo and being able to live 15mins drive fro the center and still be able to afford acreage, but the job that m husband does would be difficult to find there

Hi everyone, We are heading for any small town in WA as long there is a bigger cit nearby. I am an architect so I have to be a bit worried about jo prospects although I intend to start my own little practice as soon a it is practically possible to do so. I like a quiet life. I hate nois cities, but I would not rule out living in Perth. Eventually though, w (wife and kids) wouldnt mind settling down in places lik Queensland/Brisbane

Is it okay to go again?
Originally we were looking at going to Brissie, but due to some change in circumstances and a very real chance that I COULD be about to b offered a job in WA we're no looking at just North of Perth.
Fingers (and Toes) crossed that it all works out this time
