I know these have been asked to death before, but I'm still not sur
about few things. We will eventually move to Sydney, but for the firs
entry we are going to Perth for a short holiday.
So what should we do or don't do on our first entry, considering Pert
is not our end target?
1. Open bank account
If we open a bank account in Perth, will it be a problem later on t
access the funds from Sydney? Will there be anything that require us t
do transaction from the place we open the account? E.g. closing it, etc
I assume the 6 week period will be from 1st entry so opening ban
account later when we move to Sydney will be more troublesome. An
advice?
2. Tax number
So we just enter Perth, find internet cafe and apply TFN online? W
won't have permanent address yet so can I use my relative's address i
Sydney?
3. Medicare
Do we need to apply now or later after we move? As with the ban
account, can we apply in Perth but later live in Sydney? My assumptio
is yes but if anyone can confirm, that will be great!
4. Driving license
This should wait, right? My license can be converted to Oz license. Bu
I understand each state has different license? So better to convert i
Sydney?
Thanks! :waves

I would think you'll probably be slugged with ATM withdrawal fees if
using an ATM from another bank, and possibly some inconvenience if there
are no local branches of the bank you have your account with. If you're
with one of the major banks, you should be okay as it'll be pretty much
operated nationally.
Opening a bank account is easy, all you need is to pass the 100-point
test which is a piece of cake if you have a passport, a foreign driver's
licence and a foreign credit card or ATM card.

If you are comfortable with your relatives receiving your TFN mail...

Medicare is an Australia-wide system, so it won't matter if you move
interstate.

You can swap your interstate licence in your destination state if you so
wish to. But again, with no permanent address, it may prove difficult to
convince WA that you are a WA resident for the purposes of being
issued a licence.

Peter, thanks for your reply!
What's a 100-point test? I was told that the bank also require TFN
otherwise they will hold back the interest. Is this true? If so the
probably I won't open an account yet since I won't receive my TFN b
the time I return from Perth (only have 4 days including weeken
there)

Please pardon me for butting in, but as a traveler you shouldn't
have any problem if have passport, entry visa, and drivers
license or something.
Identity documents have different point values, and these
have to add to 100. See the following site for quick list.

Almost all large banks here operate nationwide. If have an
international credit card such as American Express, Barclays,
etc. you shouldn't have any problems. Your credit card provider
can tell you if usable anywhere in Australia.

I could be wrong, but you will probably have to provide the 100
points worth of identification rather than just pick up a tax
number online.

Federal, not state, so good anywhere here.

I don't know if you have different license classes in the UK.
Australia does. If have a commercial license, such as a truck
license, it can be used in any state.
In the meantime you should be able to drive on a UK license, but
it might be worthwhile to check with the Aussie consulate there.
If you belong to an automobile club, can get an international
license from them at little or no cost, but don't know that it
would be necessary these days.
The time and date differentiation can confuse some travelers.
As write this, it is 3:50 PM Friday EST in Sydney. 1:50 PM in
Perth.
GMT time is 5:50 AM Friday. London time is 5:50 AM Friday.
In New York it has been Friday for 1:42 hours, but in Denver
it is 11:50 MST Thursday, and 10:50 PST Thursday in Los
Angeles. See:
http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/
In New York, 1:42 AM Friday.

No problem here - All the major banks are represented in Perth s
you'll have no issue using any cards or accounts when you get back t
Sydney

Again, no problem, we actually had the TFN sent to a holiday rental w
stayed in although keep in mind if going down this route it can take 2
days for the TFN to be sent out. I wrote a blog entry on applying fo
your tax file number here which you may find of interest :)

Personally I would. You have 6 months (from memory) to convert your U
license....hmmm must get that sorted myself sometime!
Exciting times hey :
