I am currently in Australia on an ETA from the US. I am planning to fly
to New Zealand at the end of the three month stay allowed by the visa.
How long do I have to stay in New Zealand for my visa to reset in
Australia? I am flying out one morning and coming back the next and just
want to double check that I'll be able to finish my vacation on my
return. Thank you for your help!

Hi Annika,

There's no set rule about this - as long as you do it just once, DIAC
doesn't seem to mind but if you find that you're doing it every three
months then you ought to come up with a better plan.  No minimum stay
offshore and whether it's a day or a week DIAC will still tend to
think that you're staying in Australia serially.

Thank you so very much for your help. What do you suggest I do next
then? I want to stay the year allowed by my ETA leaving the country
and returning if possible. If it isn't possible, what are my other
options? And why is there a multiple entry clause on my ETA if they
start frowning on the multiple entry part? Thank you very much again
for your time!:)

Annika,

It's more about the fact that you shouldn't be using an ETA to *reside*
in Australia. An ETA is only for you to visit Australia as a tourist.

When boarding the flight to NZ, some airlines have been known to ask ETA
holders for proof that they have outbound flight tickets from Australia.
This goes towards your re-admissability into Australia from NZ.

Australian Customs may want to see evidence of that as well if they
suspect you're using your ETA to live in Australia.

Sorry for the ignorance, but what is an ETA?

It's the Electronic Travel Authority, which is an electronic visa for
eligible passport holders.

There are 68 other definitions which readers can find
at following site.  As it says that they are looking for
further definitions, if you act quickly you can
suggest " Electronic Travel Authority" to make it 69 :-)

I am not trying to reside in Australia on an ETA. I am actually looking
into going to school here next year and am travelling around the country
researching possibilities and visiting friends. I still don't understand
the purpose of having a visa that says multiple entry within the year
that its valid if I would have problems doing multiple entries. Can
someone please explain this to me or explain what my other options are?
Is it possible to just extend my ETA without leaving the country? Thank
you again for your help.

Depends... which of the 68 definitions do you want? :-)

As readers might want to challenge this, they can check
