Anyone has any idea how it works when the Federal/PSC hires? The
process looks like very complex and slow. For example, one of my
friends applied for a "permanent position" for a department in federal.
Here is the timeline:-
Job advertised: December' 2004 (Deadline in Jan' 2005)
My friend applied:- Jan' 2005
No response till end of April' 2005
1st Interview:- May' 2005
No response till end of August' 2005
2nd Interview:- Sept' 2005
Reference check: Oct' 2005
AND no reply/response till now !!!!
How does it work? What are the processes involved here? How can anyone
know the status? Why it takes so long? Why they don't let you know what
is the intention? etc etc ..... Any idea?

It takes a great deal of time to find a Quebecer that remotely qualifies for
the position.

Welcome to the federal government where there is a different concept of
time and spending. :-D

I hear you! Thankfully I wasn't out looking to get in when they were calling
people 30 years ago offering jobs. I turned down the job they offered during
the first call, but when they called me back two weeks later with another -
I accepted.
To be sure - the times have changed.

Some jobs they get 15 or 20,000 applications for depending on what it is
for....

When I applied for the foreign service there were over 9000 applicants for
about 80 positions. Another problem for the government lies in the openness
of the competitions which leads to legal appeals from unhappy applicants.
The result is that they try to make their competitions completely bullet
proof.

Hello Jim:
When it would be? Since your name appears with "Former" :-), I would
assume you have worked for long in foreign service and it would be long
time ago. If so, imagine the scenario now. There would be 9000 times
100 applicants for 80 positions if it had to be now. Also if the
competition was "bullet proof", it would be "nuclear proof" at present
... lol
Good luck to all who are in the (fed job) war :-)
