I am a 44 year old Transportation professional with a degree.  I am on
a year sabatical and would like to go to Canada to work legally during
this time.

What visa should I go for?  Do I need a work sponsor?

I have family in Vancouver who may sponsor me.

Any advice appreciated... thanks

It is better for you not to try to enter canada, you are not welcome there.

There are plenty of transportation companies looking for people who
would be able to arrange a work permit if you are suitable. Problem is
it would take a few months to sort out (if your lucky) so you may run
out of time if you only have a year.

Plenty of people come over as backpackers and work seasonal jobs but
that depends upon your nationality and there are strict regulations
involved.
