They mail it to your address.

Hello, Peregrinater:
I just saw your post, and as you have been given questionable
information let me clear it up for you as my partner and I have just
been through the process - successfully, I might add.
You will receive permanent resident papers for landed immigrant status.
But this is not your permanent resident card. You will be given, in
these papers, a short window of only about four months or so for you to
COLLECT IN PERSON your permanent resident card from the Canadian
border. If you do not collect it by the due date, you will forfeit your
right to permanent residency status and will have to start the process
all over again. You will then be grilled by an immigration officer at
the border, and you would be well advised to spend at least a few days
in Canada before you return for your belongings, unless you decide then
and there to stay in Canada. After your papers are stamped, you hold on
to them, but you cannot start work in Canada until the permanent
resident card actually arrives at your Canadian address, which takes, I
am told, about six weeks. We went up three weeks ago, so we have at
least another three weeks to wait. I hope this has cleared it up for
you. Good luck.

Hmm........
So I guess my sister was lucky in that they "SENT IT VIA MAIL" late last
yr.
I had to pick mine up (arrived bout 3 yrs before sister).
honest answer is that it could be either esp. if they request you to go back
for another photo (has happened on occasion as a search through the group
archives will show).
You were not given "questionable information" in either of the first two
answers.
AFAIK you would have received a "passport request" to send your passport in
for the one shot entry visa to be stamped in there.
You used to get papers but that was some years ago now. I got an "IMM 1000"
I think it was ?
Yet my sister got the passport request under the newer rules.
If you search through the archives (held on Google under the groups page
not the web) you will find or there may even be some threads still hanging
around in here (depends on settings in your news reader). These will help
clarify (or confuse) things a bit more.
Sorry the answer is not straight forward as "laurice4" made out but happy
landings anyway.

What BS.
1. When you "land" your PR card will be processed at that time (picture
taken or they will use yours). The actual processing is done in Sydney NS.
2. If you give Immigration an address in Canada, the PR card will be mailed
there. The card can then be forwarded to you by your friends at the
address.
3. If you don't have a Canadian address, you have 180 days to give CIC one.
If not then you would have to re-apply for the PR card in Canada and would
have to pick it up.
4. if there is a problem with the photo on the PR card, you will be
informed by mail at the address that you gave, that you must attend a CIC
office and have the picture re-taken. Once that is done, the card is
re-processed and you have to pick it up at the office where the picture was
taken.
5. After you are "landed" you have to reside in Canada for 2 of the
following 5 years. Not having a PR card does not invalidate your PR status.

Hey laurice4,
Please read the OP's question before providing them with misleading
information and calling other people's advise questionable. He is
asking about the PR card.
And where did you learn that you cannot start working till you get your
PR card. As soon as you land you apply for your SIN card and they
immediately give you your SIN (the number) and send the card by mail.
As long as you have your number you can start working.
OP - Please look at PMM's reply below. He clearly describes the
process.
