Do Canadian citizens require a passport to enter Canada?

Perhaps that is a silly question but here are the details:

I am a Canadian citizen living abroad.
I have a 10 month old son who was born abroad and has never been to
Canada.
My "wife" and I are not married.
I am planning to obtain a Canadian Citizenship Certificate for my son
so that my "wife", son, and I can visit Canada. I understand that my
wife will need a visitors visa.
We are only planning to travel between the country where we are living
and Canada. We do not have any plans in the near future to travel with
our son to any third country.

In this case, is it also necessary to obtain a passport for my son, or
the Canadian Citizenship Certificate will be sufficient for him to
visit Canada?

Thank-you

Assuming that you intend to fly, he would require a passport to board the
plane, and if he as a passport of a country that requires a TRV to visit
Canada, he would not permitted to fly without one.  CHC would not issue him
a TRV since he is a Canadian.  So get  him an emergency passport or a
regular one.

The embassy doesnt need to grant him citizenship, he had Canadian
citizenship automatically when he was born. But the embassy will issue
a Canadian Citizenship Certificate so that he has a document showing
his Canadian citizenship.

In any case, that was not my question. I asked if he must have a
Canadian passport to enter Canada as a Canadian citizen or if the
Canadian Citizenship Certificate is enough.

Canadian Immigration accepts a citizenship certificate as proof of
citizenship. But most airlines will require a passport for all
travellers. You can have an emergency passport issued at the consulate.
If I were you, I'd call the airlines and ask them, because Canadian
Immigration will tell you a citizenship certificate is enough
documentation to get back into Canada.
