Hello,

Can somebody answer me please:

I have a work permit for 1 year, until March 1st 2009, but I'm
experiencing some problems at work, so it could be that my employment
will end (either I'll quit or perhaps they'll fire me). So I’m asking
if someone could tell me whether I can continue staying in Canada
until March 1st, or do I have to leave immediately as my employment
ends.

Thank you in advance,
Lane

It is not that simple. Your present visa is linked to your employment,
if you are not employed at this company or any other company you don't
have the right to stay in Canada for the time of your work visa.
I believe that there is a 30 or 60 day grace period for you to find
different employment. However without employment CIC may request for
you to leave Canada.

I hope you are not counseling people in Immigration for pay.  A work permit
is just a visitor's permit with permission to work.  If the OP quits or gets
fired, s/he still is a visitor and can remain to the visitor permit expires.
S/he cannot work, without an new LMO/Work Permit but still can remain for
the duration of the status.

Thank you for your reply, I really appreciate everyone's help. I was
surprised to hear that someone would actually use the forum for pay; I
can assure you my intention was to simply get a clarification about my
own personal issue.

That is correct. I am meeting a client later today that lost his job
is and currently exploring new work permits options.  What you must do
is comply with the restrictions/conditions on your work permit.  These
likely include not working for a different employer, location or
occupation ( without a new work permit giving permission) and leaving
Canada by the expiry of the document.

If your ex-employer had you approved via a Labour Market Opinion from
Service Canada, THEY should contact that department to let them know
you are no longer there.  That is in their best interest, but does not
involve you in anyway.

You have until March to look for alternative work, and apply for a new
permit.  Even at that point you could remain in Canada if you
submitted a request to extend your visitor status and it was approved
by CIC.

If you feel you require further information, please feel free to
contact me via my website.

Hi Everyone,

I am also stucked in similar situation,

I recently got laid off and my employer said he will re-hire me after
some months since project i was working on was put on Hold, I am a
software developer and I applied for Employment Insurance,

1)My question is since it is written on my work permit i cannot work
for any other employer other than stated, I am looking for new job and
Once i get offer letter i will send it to immigration to change my
employer from Old to new. ( This step is correct or Wrong I dont know
Please advice?)

2) I applied for EI and waiting for there decison I worked continuesly
for two years and got laid off and my work permit still valid till
2010, Will I qualify for EI benefits under this Work permit since it
wont allows me to work for another employer.

3) I got my Record of employment from ex employer and, Once he decides
to hire me back, can i continue working for him, In Case i dont change
my work permit to other company and wait for him to recall me.

4) Does applying for EI effect your Permanent Resident application or
sponser ship application, since i am planning to apply for permanent
residence and sponser my brother to vist me after few months. I am
sure i will get the job pretty soon but Does applying for EI effect my
sponsership application In future??

Please advice

Regards
Noel
