Hi All,

I need some advice from the experts in this group. I am on restricted
work permit which don't allow me to work for any other employer, I got
laid off 1 month ago, I am thinking to change my current work permit
to Open work permit, I just don't know how to proceed. Do, I have to
fill any new application or changed condition application. I would
really appreciate if some experts in this group advice on this.

Thanks in advance.

You can't you can find an employer, and get them to obtain a new LMO, but
other than that your are restricted to a closed work permit.  Open work
permits in the main are for spouses of students, applicants in Canada, and
spouses of work permit holders.

No, you cannot just change from restricted work permit to open
work permit. Open work permit is generally for people "forced"
to be in Canada due to other immigration cases, e.g. refugee,
refugee applicant, spouse of foreign worker, spouse of foreign
student, in-Canada categories PR applicant which already got
first stage of approval, holder of more than 2 years TRP, and
such.

Thanks all for your response,
I have applied for EI Benefits and my claim was rejected the reason
was I am on restricted work permit and i cannot find another job
untill i change my work permit to Open permit. I paid my EI for more
than a year and not elgible for benefits, what are my options in this
situation. Please advice I would really appreciate it.

Thanks

Yes, that's correct. The EI benefit for people in between
employment is only for people that open to employment in Canada.
In short, as holder of restricted work permit you are not
eligible for EI.

I am not sure if this is possible, but you should try not to pay
those EI premium in the first place, since you are not eligible
for its benefit.

> what are my options in this situation.

Not much. The only thing I can think of is suing EI for taking
your money while have no intention to give you benefit.

You have to pay UEI unfortnately.  You can apply for a new WP with a
different employer but you will only get another restricted WP if it is
approved.
