Hi,
Does anybody know a cheap car insurance for new immigrants? Thanks!

If you find any let us all know (even the Canadians)
Only just seeing premiums drop marginally after 2 1/2 yrs

Also depends on which province you are asking about as well.

I am based in Vaughan, Toronto. My 20 years "no accident" history from
my home country (Greece) is not accepted here. For a Mazda 1996 the
rate was $300 a months. I didn't accept it. Do you know a car insurace
that asks around $200 a months. I am reading in the NG that most new
immigrants pay around $2000 a year. But how, which insurance? Thanks
for help.

I just cannot get my head around some of the rates being quoted here,
like $300 per month. I paid ?288 in the UK for the whole year on a brand
new spanking Nissan last year. I take it there is another agenda behind
the high premiums rather than the quality of driving?

I ain't looking forward to buying car insurance.

It was even the fellow issuing my driver's license at the Ontario DMV
office who told me that "all insurance companies in Canada are a true
rip off - they will rip you off every which way they can"

Crikey!

So it's not looking good for either car insurance or banking!

OK. Now I know all these crazy car insurance things in Canada.

Next question, has anyone here ever rented from car rental company such as
Avis or Thrifty in Canada?
How much they charge for liability or comprehensive per day in average?
Just wanna to compare to those in US.

<snip>
Co. I worked for had to hire a minivan from thrifty Fri. afternoon till mon
morning and inc. insurance etc. came to well over $270

Pretty sure bulk of that was insurance.

And that's bout 1/2 yr ago.

Good job they were paying !

Most US insurers will cover the insurance for renting cars in Canada.
If yours doesn't, try checking with your credit card company if they will.
I know that most Visa Gold cards do, so does Discover and AmEx.
However, such insurance is usually secondary.
I believe Diners Club provides primary coverage, but not sure about that.

Welcome to Canada, where cheap car insurance doesn't exist.

Your better off riding a bike or something.

Why is Canadian car insurance so high? I thought US car insurance was
expensive enough!

I can agree with the others on this thread that cheap car insurance doesn't
seem to exist in Canada.  My husband and I are selling our car now that
we're moving within walking distance of the subway.  It's hard to justify
spending the insurance/maintenance/fuel/parking/licensing, etc. when the bus
is right outside your door and the subway's a ten minute walk.  We didn't
even insure me on the car since I don't have a provincial drivers license
yet, and we were paying around $2,000 per year.

Good luck in your search though!

Renee :)

Does anyone know if it is any better if one can "transfer" an insurance
policy from the US to Canada?
I am currently with State Farm in the US and they said they can directly
transfer the policy once I move.

I don't know whether that is going to transfer all the discounts, etc. like
defensive driving, no record, no claims, etc. or would I be starting with a
blank slate.

Any ideas?

I transferred my insurance policy with State farm from California to
Ontario. Rate is almost the same with currency conversion and discounts.

If you have a no accident record with your present insurer, bring a
certificate from them to that efffect.  IT will get you a better price.

Not true.  I just did that.  I brought such a letter from AllState in
the U.S. and showed it to AllState Canada agents and it had no positive
effect at all.  The idiots at AllState Canada said that because the
Canada DMV could only pull up 6 years of clean driving experience (very
clean mind you) and not the 20 years that they require, our premiums had
to be increased from $370 per month (for two old vehicles) to $700 per
month.  We of course declined, and are still driving our cars using our
U.S. insurance.  State Farm agents have simply told us that they don't
want any new clients.

Are you saying that State Farm Canada is not taking any new insurance
clients?
Or was it just the agent that you spoke to?

We contacted three different State Farm agents, and they all said that
State Farm Canada does not want any new clients, that they have too many
already and more than they can handle.

Wow ! That doesn't sounds too good for us.
We were heavily banking on going with State Farm for our car insurance once
we move to Canada.
I have stayed with State Farm here in the US for more than a year, and just
last month renewed with them, even though I was getting a slightly better
deal with Progressive.
My logic was that when we move early next year, they will automatically
transfer our policy, so the extra $$ at this point would be worth it.

Maybe they won't count us as "new clients" - what do you think?

Also, what are the different things one can do to bring car insurance down
in Canada?
Here in the US there are things like Defensive Driving courses, good student
discounts, etc.

Hi

Before buying my car here I have tried 10 insurance brokers. No one
called me bakc and I could only get a quote on the Web. Some brokers
told me they are not getting new clients.

It is really bad the insurance issue in Canada.

Cheers

Paulo

Same as I said in another post "Kanetix" wanted 50% more than I pay at
present.
I would not go near them with a long pole !
