I called the customer service phone number at bcis and they said that a
person doesnt need a lawyer for a marriage visa.

Hi:

They are NOT allowed to say that -- because it is up to YOU, not them.
The choice is yours.

There are some cases where it would be an excellent idea to get a
lawyer.  And others where people do it themselves with no problems.

Maybe they were indicating there is no legal requirement to get a
lawyer, not that a lawyew is/is not needed them specifically.

Once I called them and asked the status of my case and how long they
thought it would take. The lady said that "she was not Miss. Cleo". Does
this mean that I am supposed to call the Pschycic Friends Network? Being
that they are contracted workers, I am surpised that from time to time
they don't slip up and ask, "Would you like catsup for your fries".
There has been a fair amount of lawyer bashing latley and I think that
the poster is just trying to add to the fire. Probably Booger or
SeaDave... Both of which have not been approved yet, so the don't know
if a lawyer should have been used.... Maybe if the get an RFE they can
ask Folinskyinla or M. Udall for some free advice, as they both seem to
feel that "Lawyers are a waste of money" and a "Chimanzee could fill out
the forms"...

Unless you have some legal issues a lawyer will be a big waste of money.

I don't think this blanket statement applies to everyone.
Some people need tax assistance just to file 1040-EZ.

A 1040-EZ? Sorry, but anyone who needs a lawyer for that should not be
allowed in public without supervision.

Everybody petitioning the BCIS under immigration law and every foreign
fiancee applying for a benefit (visa) under immigration law is dealing
with legal issues.
