Hi Wendy,
It will vary greatly on your location and your bank, but just to give
you our example:
My fiance arrived in April 2004. A week after his arrival, after we
got married, we went to my bank (Wells Fargo) where I do all my
banking. We were able to add him to my current checking account, and
open his own checking account, without a social security number. He
showed his passport as ID and that's all they required, they didn't
even need to see our marriage license. Once he got the SSN several
weeks later, we let the bank know. After that, he opened a secured
credit card there also.
So in our case, it was very simple, and a social security number was not
needed. Your experience might be different...but hopefully it will be
just as easy.
Best Wishes,
Rene
