Hello.  I'd like to take a vacation in the US.  I have my own money to
spend, so it isn't a problem.  I have a friend of the opposite sex
whom I have worked and corresponded with who lives in the area.  So I
also have someone to look out for me if needed.  We may also continue
our work when I go there.  I am not officially employed by my friend,
but I help with writing and researching.

We have known each for for a few years now.  So I know this is going
to look suspicious.  I have every intention of coming back home.  I
don't even know what it would be like around there since I have never
met him.  He has never been able to see me in my own country (in Asia)
for personal reasons.  I am not going to deny that we are interested
in each other.

Getting a round trip ticket, pocket money and hotel reservations are
things I can do.  But I still worry that I'll be held suspect.  I can
understand the concern of the officials.  I don't intend to get
married there and make an excuse to stay.  But how can I convince the
US Embassy of that?   It's clear that Thais, Filipinos, Latin
Americans and such are held in suspicion.  At least, that is my
impression.  I know this is a tricky matter.

May I also ask: what are the top reasons for the rejection of Tourist
Visa applications?

Please kindly advice me.

Hi,

I really don't know the top reasons for tourist visa rejections, but
when aplying for one you need to show strong ties to your home country -
that means if you're employed, pay stubs/letter from employer, if
student, your current student status. If you own property, have family,
support your application with such an evidence as well. As for the round
trip ticket and hotel reservations, I'd book them but not purchase
before visa is issued (however, round-trip ticked at the point of entry
is, I'd say a must).

When visiting your friend as a tourist, you can not work, regardless of
the fact that you're not employed by him.

Many years ago, a letter of invitation from the US friends/families
stating the time of stay and some plans (i.e. visiting certain places of
interest etc) was beneficial to tourist visa applicants in some
countries - unfortunately I don't know if that is a case nowadays, but
you may want to check with the US embassy in your country.

Good luck!

The biggest reasons for rejection:

1. lack of ties to homeland
2. lack of financial resources for the trip

I am wondering... Why did you post on a marriage based visa newsgroup
and not the non marriaged based one?
