Removal of Conditions on PR: Approval/ Appointment/ Interview

Hey Everyone,

Having been so careful over the years, I never thought I'd be sending a
message like this but here goes:

A couple weeks ago I received a letter from USCIS that my application to
remove the conditions on my PR had been approved. There were
instructions to  make an infopass appointment and go I guess to the INS
office which for me would be in Detroit.

The problem is that I kept that letter "really safe" and I cannot find
it anywhere now. Here are my questions:

1. Do I need it? Is the letter something I need to take to the interview
with me? I know more docs is better than less, but should I cancel my
appointment until I can find the letter?

2. Do I just need to take my conditional GC and ID, or do I need my
passport and the rest of the supporting docs we previously
  submitted as well?

3. When I made my infopass appointment, the option that looked like the
right one was labelled  "You have received an approval letter or Form
I-797 from the Service Center or local office instructing you to come
into the office for alien identification card processing / passport
stamp." Now this option seems more like two processes ago from where
I should be now...was that the right option to select? Will I be
turned away if this is the wrong thing?

4. My passport expired in a few weeks. My embassy will not renew
it until it's expired for real. I don't foresee needing to
travel anywhere, so that's not a huge problem for me...but will
  it be for INS?

I'd appreciate any input y'all can give on these concerns. Thanks for
all your help over the years...yes, you too Ian.

Thanks

Dean.

I would say it's better to have it, since it proves your approval....but
perhaps they have a way of looking up your status anyway, even without
the letter, I don't know.  I would say it's worth it to try anyway, if
you can't find the letter.

To my knowledge, you don't need more supporting docs.  Your
conditional GC and ID should be enough.  I don't believe you really
even need your passport.

I don't know what two processes ago that sounds like to you, but it
sounds like the right one for this appointment.

As long as you don't need the I-551 stamp in a current passport for
travel, you should be ok with an expired passport, or even no passport
at all.  I believe some offices can make up a new I-94 for you and stamp
that with the I-551.

Best Wishes,
Rene

Thanks Rene,

One more question. Does my wife need to come to this appointment
with me? I didn't think so but would hate to make the 3-4 hour-long
trip twice.

Thanks.

No, she does not.

My wife also had her I-751 approved a short while ago and we're going
to Detroit on Monday. Looking at her approval letter, I don't see
anywhere that it actually mentions to bring the letter with you. I
would think you would be okay there. The letter does say that you
should bring your passport and three identical photos for your new
green card. I assume they mention your passport so you can get it
stamped for travel purposes, but if you don't plan to travel before
receiving your new green card, it may not be "required".

You don't need to take all the supporting documents you submitted with
the I-751. You've already been approved. As the letter states, the
purpose for the appointment is to get your green card replaced.

I also chose the "received an approval letter" option when I made the
appointment. It's the only one that really fits, so if you're wrong,
I'm wrong too.

Good luck!

John
