What's his profession? If he has a certain profession, you can put that
in there, as it seems likely he would job search in that area. If you
really have no idea, you can write "unknown".

He hasn't formally worked for years, because until she died, he was a
full-time caregiver for his mother, and since then, he's been
partially disabled due to an injury. And before that, he was
self-employed in a variety of enterprises, small business retail. So,
while he will eventually do something, I don't know what it will be at
the moment. Probably not something that he's done before.
I think that "unknown" is probably a good answer...
