I just got married june 2nd to a us citizen. we are about to go sign the
papers to the lawyer on friday. but we are having some troubles. i'd
like to know what are my chances of being able to stay here in the
states if 1) he does come to sign the papers but decides to separate
after 2) if he refuses to sign them.

I understand afer 2 weeks you worry more about your greencard than your
marriage.

That would make me a rather die-hard cynic.

the reason why i'm not worried about the marriage is that because he
changed completly and now I'm subject to emotional  abuse on almost a
daily basis. I tried to work something out to make it better but he is
no longer the person he used to be.
By papers I meat the petition he had to file. We just have to go in and
sign so that the lawyer can send it out.

If he doesn't sign the petition, you can remain in the US as long as
your current status remains valid.
If he signs the petition, you can remain in the US as long as the I-485
is pending.
If he doesn't show up at the final interview, you will have to leave
that same day (unless you are placed in jail waiting deportation).

My guess is that either he he just freaking out about being married -
which is normal and shouldn't last. Or you didn't know him in the first
place (did you marry him within 6 months of meeting him?).

we were together 1 1/2years before we got married. I do have a lawyer
do who files everything. If we do get divorced(because I prefered that
then waiting for it to turn into something ugly) can my lawyer still
help me somehow?

If you divorce before the final interview, you will have to leave the
US.
If you divorce after you got your green card (for that you'll have to
convince the officer that your marriage was genuine), you can remain.

Susie,

"the petition"?  Do you mean an I-130 petition?  And is that the only
paper to be signed and filed?

You're leaving an awful lot of important information out of your tale.
Let's start with how you came to be in the USA.  And don't stop there.

I came to the us as a student 3 years ago. what we did so far was give
in all our documents(marriage licence,birth certificates,visas..etc) to
the lawyer. I beleive it is the I-130 that we have to go and sign on
friday. he agreed to do that.

Susie,
I would think that you'd be submitting an I-485 application to adjust
status along with that I-130 petition?  Submitting the I-130 alone does
not allow you to remain in the USA.
