A Little OT:  Agencies to Facilitate Moves from China to USA

My fiancee and her daughter are now in Guangzhou for their medical exam
and interview.  We're a little nervous, but keeping a generally positive
outlook.

If you'll forgive me for deviating a bit from the subject of visas, I
have a question about how to make their move from mainland China to the
US easier.

I'm told that there are agencies that can arrange and facilitate moving
stuff - personal effects in general - between countries.  In essence,
they're international movers who can help with arranging who actually
transports their stuff, and of course help with Customs quickly.

Do any of you have any positive or negative experiences with such agencies?

Thanks for the ideas!

I have heard of people who have had major problems, but then nobody is
going to post saying it was all on time, on costs etc.

Personally I did not bother, by the time I seperated out my must take
stuff and looked at the cost of shipping the other stuff vs the cost, it
did not make sense, also it was  a cathartic experiance.

Thanks for the reply.

So then you just took your stuff with you on the airplane, or sent it
through UPS/FedEx/etc., or ...?

Not from China, but we purged heavily. What was left over that was small
and heavy went in the el cheepo mail (from Greece). The rest was
brutally forced to fit in our luggage (we went a little excess). Current
flying conditions being what they are, I don't know if you'll get a
break with more luggage allowance or not (some people are reporting that
is so). Often if you let the airline nkow you're immigrating they can
help you out with some extra as well (boxes can be 'luggage').
Be VERY careful with your fragiles.

Alternately, big stuff can come in container, but it takes awhile.
It's easy to cargo-share from Asia; look in some of the expat
publications for tips & shippers. I'd say to try and avoid a "moving
company" if you can.

I actually brought 2 bikes over, but in 2 trips, for some reason they do
not charge extra Internationally but do nationally.

The things I left behind. mainly books, which I occasionally miss.

I just used my luggage allowance, 120lbs?. But like I say had left stuff
on prior visits, I put all my really heavy stuff in my carry on and
acted nontionally with it cutting into my shoulder.

Thanks for the suggestions, folks!

By the way, she did get her K-1 yesterday!  As we Texans are supposed to
say, "yeehah!"
