For information:
I applied for citizenship right at the start of the "five years less
90 days" period. By the time my application was received at the
Texas Processing Center and given a priority date, it was only 84 days
before the end of my five years as a resident alien. (Earlier posts
had warned me of the risk of being even a day early.) I have been
already been fingerprinted and there are still few days to go before
the five year period is up. Told at the outset that I should expect to
be notified to attend for interview within 730 days of the first notice
to me, that is May 16 2007.
Details for those really interested:
August 1 2000 Arrived in the US as a resident alien immigrant
May 2 2005, Posted off N-400 application (by certified mail)
May 9 2005, Application received in Mesquite, TX. Priority date now
set as May 9 2005
May 11 2005, Check cashed by US Treasury
May 16 2005, I-797C Notice of Action: Telling me that my application
has been received and payment made
May 19 2005, Date stamp on envelope of above letter to me
May 21 2005, Above letter received
June 1 2005, I-797C Notice of Action: Telling me to go to Charlotte for
fingerprinting on July 13 2005, (i.e. 6 weeks advance notice)
June 6 2005, Date stamp on envelope of above letter to me
June 8 2005, Above letter received (i.e. 5 weeks advance notice)
July 13 2005 Fingerprinting carried out
Comments: The N-400 form was downloaded from the internet. This can be
filled in on-line (I printed off a blank copy of the N-400 first,
filled it in and made sure I wasn't missing anything before filling
it in online). The online completion was very easy and customer
friendly. I also checked out how to pay the fees by printing out the
one page M-479 note re Current Naturalization fees. The M476 Guide to
Naturalization form had lots of useful information giving excellent
advice on how to fill up the N-400 form and, importantly, what
additional documents to send along with the N-400.
Fingerprinting at Charlotte was scheduled for 11am on July 13 but I
arrived very early to miss traffic (8am) yet was immediately slotted in
without having to wait. (the office opened at 8am). The electronic
fingerprinting process was very sophisticated and I was out by 9am. It
was important to remember to take the Appointment notice and green card
- or else one will be turned away.
I await developments and will post anew when the next activity happens.
Still over 700 days to go yet...

Hi Roastbeef34,
I don't think you'll have to wait 700 days. Here's my timeline.
March 17, 2005: Filed N-400.
April 29, 2005: Fingerprinted.
May 20, 2005: Received interview notice.
Aug 4, 2005; Interview is scheduled for this date.
My initial receipt said it'd take some 800 days. However, things are
happening pretty swiftly so far, I'm in California.
Good luck.
